Question: Does an inbound link have less impact if it’s a linked image as opposed to a text-based link?
Answer: That’s a If the image does NOT have an ALT attribute, then certainly a keyword heavy inbound link would indeed have more value. If the image DOES have the ALT attribute vs. the same keyword in visible text, I would guess that the image has only slightly less value.
For your own site, therefore, try to use the ALT attribute with linked images. It certainly is a best practice, and used in conjunction with keyword-heavy text will definitely help.
