Question: Questions from a SEO novice, is there a such thing as too many metatags? And, does the order matter in which it is listed on my website.
Answer: Meta Tags DO matter – very much so. But it’s confusing. There are three important META TAGS for SEO. First, the TITLE tag – hugely important to put your target keywords in this tag. Second, the META DESCRIPTION tag – this tag heavily influences your description on a Google search, so put a pithy, exciting, keyword heavy description here. Third, the META KEYWORDS tag – this tag is IGNORED, does nothing. You can use it – it won’t help you, but will not hurt you.
The confusion is that there are three important tags, only two of which matter. Other non-meta tags matter a great deal as well – example: H1 / H2 tag. We teach this in detail in our class on Page Tags.
