Question: How can he tell the difference between a home page and a landing page? In search results?
Answer: In terms of Google search results, look at the URL being displayed. So if you do the search for ‘Reverse Mortgage Calculator’ on Google, you’ll see –
www.reversemortgage.org/ (home page)
The ‘home page’ is just the web domain – http://www.company.com/. The ‘landing page’ or other page has more directories and/or pages after that trailing ‘/’ (slash mark).
Why is this important? Google HEAVILY favors home pages, so if there is a search that is truly critical for your company, place your high priority keywords in the TITLE tag, build out the page content, use some H1 / H2’s, etc., and you have a much, much better chance of getting to the top of search.
In addition, if you do a search like ‘Reverse Mortgage Calculator’ and you see MANY home pages on the top, page 1 results, then you know this is probably a very competitive search… People are using their MOST POWERFUL asset – home page, TITLE tags to get to the top. That means if you want to be in the Top 10, you probably will need to do that as well.
