Question: How exactly do you know that the keywords are ignored? Why do people think otherwise? who is telling them otherwise?
Answer: On of the biggest confusions out there in SEO is – ‘Does Google ignore the META KEYWORDS tag?’ Yes, yes, yes. Google has publically stated that it IGNORES this tag –
Check out this video by Google’s Matt Cutts, on whether they ignore the META KEYWORDS tag – http://tinyurl.com/najsxf. Can’t get more public than that.
That said, the META KEYWORD tag does a lot of damage to the Web community. Many platforms such as WordPress or Go Daddy’s Website tonight DO ask you for your keywords… And then people think that once the have inputted their keywords, they have actually made an impact on their SEO. But, sadly, that’s not true. So it’s a terrible combination – they THINK that by entering keywords they have actually done something, and they are given the FALSE impression that their SEO efforts actually did something… Which they didn’t. It would be better if the software didn’t ask at all.
Thanks for asking this important question. I get it frequently, and answer it frequently – it’s probably the No. 1 source of tag confusion out there on the Internet. Yes, Virginia, Google DOES ignore the META KEYWORD tag. So does Bing, for that matter.
