Question: This sounds rather sneaky but could a site/person every use their competitor’s name in their keywords? For instance, my site, LivingBanners, gets compared to CaringBridge a lot. It’s very different but their are some similarities. LivingBanners is a line of gift banners for people dealing with some serious health issues. We ship a real banner with a message of hope/courage, there is real add-on flair plus a virtual message board where people can post messages of support, like signing a virtual card.
As I’m looking at keywords, is it in bad form to use ‘caringbridge’ in my keywords?
Answer: For Google paid advertising (AdWords), they tend to police this based on trademarks and complaints. So if your competitors have trademarked their names AND they complain to Google, Google will probably not allow you to use their names as keywords in paid advertising (AdWords). Also – of course, always be aware of any legal issues in terms of copyright infringement!
Ironically, SEO is much wider than AdWords and Google does NOT police this. So in the SEO sense you can and probably should use your competitor keywords. A great search phrase is often REVIEW plus COMPETITOR NAME or REVIEW plus COMPETITOR product, as in GEICO INSURANCE REVIEW.
So think of content that does have your competitor names / product names and write SEO-optimized content for that. It’s a great idea.
