Question: Please clairfy what CPC is? I’m not clear on what it means and how it applies?
Answer: CPC stands for ‘cost per click’ and it refers, in the Google AdWords Keywords Tool, to the ‘average’ cost that advertisers are paying someone to click FROM Google TO their website. So for a seach such as ‘Wedding Florist,’ you might see CPC’s in the $2.00 to $3.00 range, but when the phrase is ‘Wedding Florist New York City’ the CPC may jump to $5.00 or more.
Why is this important for SEO (Search Engine Optimization)? The CPC data provided by Google gives you give food for thought as to what phrases are more valuable. So as you would build out your website, you would realize to focus not just on ‘Wedding Florist’ but on ‘Wedding Photographer Florist,’ in this example.
For both SEO and for AdWords, the riches are in the niches. So you are looking for more specific, more focused keyword phrases, and ultimately phrases that are close to a ‘buy’ or an ‘action.’ Someone looking for ‘Wedding Florist New York City’ is very close to engaging a photographer; dominating that search is much better than dominating the generic searches ‘Wedding Florist’ or ‘Wedding.’
