Question: Is it OK to offer clients incentives to review us online? Like a giftcard or discount?
Answer: Well, we do leave in a free country, don’t we? Well, not so much… LOL. The FTC says that legally these payments MUST be disclosed. So in that sense without disclosure it may be illegal. (I am not a lawyer! This is not legal advice!).
Second, Google / Yelp, etc., do frown on soliciting reviews. I draw a line at encouraging vs. soliciting reviews. Encouraging – yes. Remind, ask, cajole, beg people. But I wouldn’t necessarily pay them. Solicit = pay them. Not such a great idea.
But, for all intents and purposes, it is very unlikely you will be discovered, so I would think for a small company a little grease can make the wheels of commerce turn easier. Just be circumspect!
Oh, and did I mention I am not a lawyer, and this isn’t legal advice and you shouldn’t follow it, and don’t sue me, etc., etc. It’s a wild wild west out there!
