Question: As a small business and web site is up and rock’n do you check your links weekly, monthly…? Need to have a set routine — what is your thoughts?
Answer: As frequently as possible, of course, is the best. For most businesses, I would recommend at least one blog post per week, and at least one syndicated news release per month. You always want to put these NEW pages on your HOME PAGE as summaries with one click links FROM the home page to your NEW CONTENT. This ‘trains’ Google that your site is updating frequently, and Google will respond with quickly indexing your content (once changed).
Beyond that, I would check my rank on Google at least monthly for a slow-moving industry, perhaps weekly for a more fast-paced industry. It depends on the priority that Google is for your marketing plan.
I would also log into Webmaster Tools, and also check site:mysite.com on Google at least weekly to make sure that everything is good. You want to react quickly if your site drops from the index, or there is a major problem.
It’s a lot like going to the gymn. Frequent effort is VERY important to success; you can’t just put it on auto-pilot and forget about it…
