Question: I sometimes see company ads show up when I query the company name. Isn’t that wasted money?
Answer: Yes and no. Some large companies like INTEL or DELL want to make sure that you see them FIRST when you enter their name on Google. So it’s a branding thing.
Also they want to prevent competitors from buying their names as keywords. So they bid high to preclude competitors.
For small companies, with limited budgets, I just recommend monitoring whether you show up for your name in Google searches and whether others are there. If so, you might have to ‘buy’ your name from Google… Sort of cynical, isn’t it?
