Question: I am focused on the local market – how do I go about finding keywords? How do I use the loca search results in Google tools?
Answer: Local search is absolutely critical for many businesses. First and foremost, do your searches which are usually going to be a KEYWORD plus a LOCAL as in ‘Pizza Restaurant San Francisco’ or ‘Hypnotherapist in Tulsa, OK.’ Check to see the Google PLACES listings. If they occur, they usually are placed FIRST and have a big (ugly) RED ballon next to them.
So the FIRST implication is focus on Google PLACES where appropriate. This is a different ‘game’ than SEO and covered in our Social Media class. Basically the trick is to embed your keywords in your company name, description, categories, and to get LOTS of reviews that have the KEYWORDS inside them. Google Places is KEYWORDS plus REVIEWS.
Second, on certain searches, you may NOT see Google Places and/or the ‘natural’ searches appear in a higher profile. For these, you COMPLEMENT your Google Places efforts with landing pages that focus on the keyword search PLUS the geographics. We do this for our own website (jm-seo.net); look at the very bottom of the home page and you will see defined landing pages, targeting SEO + cities in the USA / Canada. We score on page one for many cities across the country with this strategy.
Finally, in conclusion, think of your local communities just as ‘keywords’ as you build out your strategy. These local ‘helper words’ work with your ‘core keywords’ to generate content, and so use them FREQUENTLY and STRATEGICALLY throughout your website.
