Question: Can you talk about how important local search has become for organic search?
Answer: Local search – searches that have a local character such as ‘Pizza,’ ‘Personal Injury Attorney,’ ‘Roofing Company,’ etc. – are huge. Estimates are as high as 50% of all Google searches have a local character.
Now, competitively speaking, Google is trying to promote its own service, Google Places, which integrates searches from across the Web. So if your business has a local component to its inbound search activity you MUST focus on Google Places. Google often places those results BEFORE the natural / SEO results… So I strongly recommend companies focus on places; we cover this in our class on Social Media.
Reviews, both quantity and quality, are VERY important to succeeding at Google Places!
