Question: Can a landing page just be a normal web page that just takes advatage of keywords?
Answer: There are some subtle issues here. I use the term ‘landing page’ to mean a very specific thing – a page SPECIFICALLY designed for a TARGET KEYWORD search. That means your home page is NOT a landing page.
People can land ANYWHERE on your website, but that doesn’t make those pages LANDING PAGES in this sense of being keyword-focused. You will usually have many pages on your site that are not 100% SEO focused, such as product pages, informational pages, about us pages, privacy pages, etc.
So a good rule of thumb is HEAVILY optimize your landing pages and think of them as FLYPAPER for Google. They are designed to PULL IN EXTERNAL TRAFFIC. Other pages on your site, should have SEO elements, such as good TITLE tags, but may not be fully SEO compliant, as it were. That’s totally OK.
And your home page is special, as it has multiple responsibilities. It cannot be as ‘laser focused’ as a true landing page. So think of this not as either/or but as AND. You should use SEO principles throughout the site, but have a few pages that are very specifically designed to pull in traffic from Google.
