Question: Is an xml sitemap different from an html sitemap. If so is one better than the other?
Answer: Both are necessary. First and foremost, your website should have a clear, easy clickable path from the home page to ALL pages on your website. Second, you need an HTML site map – both for humans and for Google / other search bots. An XML sitemap is an add on that is helpful and useful, and recommended (but not required).
The point is reach out and make your website Google FRIENDLY based on basic HTML principles. The XML sitemap is that added extra boost after you have done #1 and #2.
