Question: We are doing well on Google this morning, but not on Yahoo. Is Yahoo really dead?
Answer: Yes, sadly, Yahoo has outsourced their search to Bing. It is now, officially, a Google vs. Bing world. In China BAIDU matters. But in the rest of the world it is really Google vs. Bing.
Yahoo was unable to compete against Google in this arena. It is very monopolistic now; Google claims about 60% of world searches, but I think that they are being very generous so as not to upset the Government. I think it is closer to 90% of searches, based on what I see with my private clients.
Bottom line: Optimize for Google and Bing will follow. Hopefully Bing will succeed, and get us back to parity. Plus Social search a la Facebook is worth watching – Social Media does seem to be the next wave, and Google has flopped miserably on Social Media (witness Google Buzz).
