Question: I have a site selling high-end skincare (www.lavandou.com) How do you determine if spending resources (time/money) in Social Media is worthwhile?
Answer: Social Media is more about relationship building, and SEO is more about lead generation. One trick with Social Media is to use URL services like bit.ly and landing pages to track how referrals go to landing pages – coupons, for example. Another metric is tracking how many TWEETS you get, how retweeted you are, how many followers you have, etc.
But, at the end of the day, Social Media is much more a branding / relationship building exercise than say AdWords is, and as such does not lend itself to concrete metrics in the same way. It is invaluable as a relationship building tool but not easily measured. In our classes on Social Media we do provide a lot of good ideas, best practices, and food for thought in this emerging area!
