Question: Is it necessary to know html to be effective at SEO?
Answer: HTML, of course, is the ‘language’ of the web, and as we learn in our SEO classes, it is really the primary language that drives Google. Google sees web pages as text documents, and the relationship between certain tags (e.g. the TITLE tag) and keywords is absolutely critical.
That said, you do not need to be an HTML expert. Understanding just a few key HTML tags and their relationship to SEO is sufficient. Then, your next step is to figure out how to get your editing software (for example, WordPress, CMS systems, Joomla) to implement the appropriate tags. And/or you can advise your web team / webmaster as to what ‘output’ you want in terms of HTML / SEO.
