Question: I had a consulting company create my website and we are now paying for them to do SEO. Is this something I can do. I have no knowledge of SEO.
Answer: You can certainly use a consultant to do SEO. But the problem is that you don’t always know what they are doing, and they certainly do not know your business like you do. So even for people who work with outside vendors, I recommend taking the SEO class.
Educating yourself will help you be a better manager of them. And in some situations, you can take control of your own web destiny yourself. If your website is important to your marketing effort, you need to prioritize that. It may be a ‘mission critical’ part of your business, and therefore you need to control it, and if not control it, actively manage it.
Unfortunately, I have seen many great businesses hampered by suboptimal websites created by ad agencies, web designers, and even ‘SEO consultants’ who know little to nothing.
