Question: Is it OK to change your keywords? And how often?
Answer: This is a common question. Keyword selection should be driven by 1) your business ‘value proposition’ and 2) the keywords that your potential customers type into Google. So an attorney that specializes in medical malpractice, for example, would target keywords / keyphrases like ‘medical malpractice attorney san francisco’ or ‘medical malpractice lawyer’ or ‘medical negligence bay area’ – that sort of thing.
So the keywords per se actually probably do not change very often, as the business doesn’t change that frequently. Neither do the customer search terms, although of course customers might search for lots of different things, the so-called ‘long-tail’ keywords.
So what DOES change and SHOULD change frequently is your website content. Blog, create news, create new pages on the website, and link to / re link them from the home page. In addition, use free news syndication services and generate new content. The new content then ‘wraps around’ your target keywords and this freshness will help you get to, and stay on, the top of Google for your target keywords…
