Question: How do you prioritize which keywords to optimize for?
Answer: You should prioritize your keywords according to this relationship: Where your unique value proposition meets customer keyword volume. So, you are looking for keywords that your customers input that MATCH your unique value proposition.
A personal injury attorney specializing in medical malpractice, for example, in San Francisco has a unique value proposition of: MEDICAL + MALPRACTICE + ATTORNEY + SAN FRANCISCO. Searches for just ‘medical malpractice’ are too broad; a search for ‘medical malpractice insurance’ is a Dr. looking for insurance, and not a prospect. But a search that has the keywords in it that matches his value proposition EVEN IF less volume can be of more VALUE.
So you are looking for the value + volume keywords. The Google keywords tool is the best for this, and we go over this in depth in our one hour keywords session.
