Question: I was told that the domain names I created from product brand names linking to our website was frowned upon by Google… Is that correct?
Answer: If you mean many multiple domain names, pointing to the SAME content, then yes. Also, if you split your website up into tiny websites with narrow names and focuses, you are splitting all your inbound link juice as well as well as the size of the websites. It is usually better to have one robust, focused website than ten micro websites. So yes I would agree with this statement.
