Question: Our business is located in many areas of Upstate NY as well as VT. How would we go about deciding which locations to put into the title tag? (Ex: We are in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Albany, etc.)
Answer: Successful SEO is all about 1) identifying your best keywords (volume and value), and 2) focusing each page on your website towards attracting quality traffic via those identified keyword choices.
In your situation you need to first, identify the target communities that people will input into their searches, and second, rank them in terms of the highest priority (greatest value to you).
Once you have ranked them, then priorize the position of your keywords. Your ‘most important’ keywords go into your HOME PAGE TITLE tag. Other major tags go on your home page, which is the most powerful page on your website. Finally, you might have landing pages specifically targeting local communities that you serve.
It’s all about focus, and then weaving them into priority tags and pages. Remember that the more you go to the home page, the more powerful. The more towards the TITLE tag the more powerful. And remember the limits: 7-10 keywords, only for the TITLE tag on any individual page.
