Question: Does it matter how many times your keywords show up on your website? The more it is there, the better?
Question: Is there a limit to the amount of keywords one should use?
Answer: There is an old Nigerian proverb that the man who goes after two mice, catches none. This is true with keywords as well. You can definitely have too many! Each page of your website – with the exception of the home page and its most powerful SEO status – should generally focus on just one or two closely related keywords. Too many keywords hurts your density and therefore your chances of getting to the top of Google.
Ideally, you should split out your website pages to have a pretty singular relationship of one target keyword / keyphrase to each particular page. I know this isn’t always possible, but you should strive for keyword focus. Lots of smaller focused pages are better than just a few gigantic, unfocused pages.
The home page is special, and I go over that in Website structure. It has the most power on your website in terms of SEO and therefore has to be handled with care. But here again your home page TITLE tag (the most powerful tag on your website) can have at most ten words. So you have to focus it on your ten most important keywords. Ten maximum. Not twelve, not fifteen, and certainly not fifty!. The META keywords tag, by the way, is generally ignored.
