Question: Do the link directories that charge generally charge a one time fee or an annual fee?
Answer: Here’s the deal with paid link directories. 1st, figure out if they show up on your priority keywords. This is another example of how critical it is to identify your target keywords and searches! If they are not showing up on your key searches, I would generally not bother with any paid directories. 2nd, if they DO show up on your target searches, look at their PageRank. The higher the PageRank the more valuable a link, especially if they are in your ‘community’ or ‘target market.’
Beyond that, how you pay them is not important. Most charge annually, but many charge monthly. It depends how valuable they are. In certain searches such as Lake Tahoe Vacation Homes, these link / directories are very very important and (unfortunately) you have to pay some of them to play. In other markets, they aren’t important at all. And in many others there are many valuable free directories that you should target, first.
