Question: How is the landing page different from the splash page or the front page of the website?
Answer: This is one of my biggest conceptual points. You can land on any page on your website, and the structure of each page is very very important. But landing pages as an SEO concept are confined conceptually to just pages that target very very specific searches.
For example, if you want to be No. 1 for the search ‘San Francisco Medical Malpractice Attorney,’ you should create a page that is highly optimized for these search keywords – TITLE tag, META DESCRIPTION tag, H1, H2, tag, etc. plus lots of keyword heavy content. Look at this page, which usually ranks in the top three for the search –
Now you can land on other pages on the website. But compare that page to their home page. The home page has to have ALL their practice areas. Its TITLE tag has to indicate the 7 most important words for the busines, etc. It is more powerful as a page, but more constrained. So, bottom line, landing pages for SEO are usually targeting long tail specific searches that you want to dominate. Other pages on your website – especially your home page – have broader needs and issues. See my complete blog post at http://www.jm-seo.net/blog/landing-pages-for-SEO.html.
