Question: If we redo our title tags, and Google reindexes do we run the risk of losing the equity in the placement we already have?
Question: Is there disadvantage to changing your title tags if you are already listed pretty high for certain keywords?
Answer: Yes, there is that risk. The rule of thumb is if you are doing well in terms of your SEO / Google / SERP Rank then do not change anything, or think hard about changing it. Any changes can spur reindexing and there is no guarantee as to what will happen.
In terms of strategy, take a look at your website rankings. Prioritize! Pages that are doing poorly – change them, and don’t worry – you have less to lose. Pages that are doing well – just watch them. When / if they begin to fall, THEN work on them.
The proof of the pudding is in the eating. So if it is working, don’t change it. Or at least think twice!
