Question: You have confirmed that I have the right idea on my SEO, but as more and more organisations become savvy and we are all chasing no. 1 or at least first page, it’s hard to see how we can beat others!
Answer: Don’t get discouraged. In my experience, for most industries, we are a long, long way away from everyone understanding SEO and getting to the top of Google. Do your searches, and check the results. Are they using the TITLE tag? Are they using the META DESCRIPTION tag? What about the H1, H2? What about ALT attributes for images. If the answer is no to one or many of these, it is not that competitive.
But, you are right. Over time it will get more competitive. Just as it is competitive to get into the Wall Street Journal or Financial Times. It is (and will be more) competitive to get to the top of Google. You just need to do as much right as possible, and look for those jewel long tail keywords for SEO, where your unique value proposition stands out. Just as in business, finding that niche is critical. It’s riches in the niches, as they say.
