Question: Does the action have to be on the right hand side? What is the negative if it is on the right?
Answer: No. It’s more a matter of choice, preference, and your guess as to how the human surfer / searcher actually works. On the one hand, the ‘golden SEO triangle’ is the top left of the page. That speaks towards putting your ‘action’ towards that golden triangle. On the other hand, inbound surfers need to have their search confirmed first, then be engaged about your product or service, and finally go to an action.
That speaks towards putting it on the right, as you are not requiring their eyes to zigzag across the page.
In all cases, put it above the fold – it should be easy to read and see. The best pages have less content, and more bullets. But ultimately it is a judgment call as to where to put the action!
