Question: Is it reasonable to start with some keywords and then refine rather than try to hit homeruns straightaway?
Answer: I always compare SEO to physical fitness. Should you try to run a marathon first? Should you try to be in the Olympics, first? No, you are right. You should try to focus on something doable and then work your way up to more competitive contests.
Keywords are all about focus. So, first, figure out how your customers search by keyword (volume) and then match that to what your business sells (value). Your easiest keywords / keyphrases to dominate in SEO are ‘long tail keywords.’ If you are a hypnotherapist in Dallas specializing in weight loss, then the phrase ‘Weight loss hypnosis Dallas’ is a very, very valuable search term for you as it clearly indicates a strong potential customer.
The good news is it is easier to dominate than a shorter tail keyphrase like ‘Hypnosis Dallas’ or just ‘Hypnosis.’
So you are right start with long tail keywords that clearly match your value proposition and work your way up to the broader searches (that are also more competitive). Focus, focus, focus when it comes to keywords!
