Question: Hi there, I think I brought this question up with Jason after the free webinar: I posed the idea that there is a difference between web space competitors and known industry competitors. Recently when doing some competitor research, our known competitors ranked hardly at all on a group of 30 keywords in comparison to our company, yet we know they are raking in the bucks! The argument from managers is that these competitors are known in the industry which I dispute to some degree as there is still the whole new customer market.
Answer: Of course these are all subsets –
I always try to point out that your Real-world competitors may not be your Google competitors. That seems to be your situation. There are a number of possibilities here. First, perhaps they are doing fantastic on AdWords advertising, and not SEO? Perhaps they are using Non-Internet marketing and that is working for them? Second, perhaps your management is overestimating how well they are doing? Unless you are privy to their internal numbers, it’s not clear that you really know how they are doing. Third, perhaps they have identified Google keywords that you have not. If you have missed keywords during keyword discovery – they might be doing well on words that you did not consider.
