Question: What are your thoughts on Tag Clouds? Useful or ignored?
Answer: First of all, it depends if they are created ‘by the browser’ or ‘by the server.’ If the server is creating the tag cloud for each page, then Google can actually see it. If Google sees it, then that text becomes part of the on page HTML / content, and it matters for SEO. The usual rules would apply – is it embedded in important tags like H1, BOLD, STRONG etc.? And is the syntax natural? It probably would look like a long string of keywords and not ‘natural’ writing, and that would deprecate it.
Secondly, if the browser is creating the tag cloud ‘on the fly’ then Google cannot see it, and it would have no impact.
