Question: Should the title tag for the home page include the number one key words from the home page only, or the number one keywords throughout all pages of the website?
Answer: This is a because it blends the TITLE tag and the HOME PAGE as structural elements. You have to understand that, to Google, the HOME PAGE is by far the most important page on your website, bar none. On that page, you have only one TITLE tag, and it is by far the most important tag on the page. So therefore, put your website’s MOST IMPORTANT keywords on the home page, TITLE tag. Think of this as your ‘elevator pitch.’
If Larry Page (the co-founder of Google) met you on the elevator, and gave you just seven words to describe your company – what would those words be? These go in your HOME PAGE TITLE Tag. These are the keywords that really describe not your HOME PAGE per se but what your business is about, especially how that business intersects with ‘customer needs,’ as defined by their own keyword queries.
What about the other pages? First of all, make them all have UNIQUE and ACCURATE TITLE tags. Their own unique TITLE tags should accurately describe the page content, be keyword focused, and be unique. Do not repeat the same TITLE tag throughout your website. Second, realize that these subordinate pages are an order of magnitude less powerful than the home page. This is your opportunity to create synergies between your business offerings and the ‘long tail’ searches by customers.
Rule of thumb: Have each page focus on one keyword family, only. Focus is key to success in SEO, and make that TITLE tag indicate the focused keyword target of each and every page on the website. Just remember that in the hierarchy, your HOME PAGE is the KING of the website and is the ‘gateway page’ for Google (and your customers) – it defines what your company is about!
