Question: Can you increase traffic by putting keywords on the actual web page content too? Or just in the html code?
Answer: Keywords are the foundation of good SEO. But they are, of course, only the starting point. Your question is excellent as it gets to the impact of writing for Google. First, figure out your keywords and prioritize them by high volume / high value keyword families. Second, weave them into your key strategic tags as you build out your website – for example, your TITLE tag and the H1, H2 family on the target pages. You want a very focused relationship between a target keyword / keyphrase and an individual page. Third, you are exactly right. Build out your content by creating keyword heavy content.
Technically, this content exists in your BODY tag. You can measure it using some simple tools such as Keyworddensity.com – a Keyword Density Measurement Tool. Usually about 3-5% is a good density. One of my favorite examples of Google friendly keyword text is from the Fillmore Florist in San Francisco. They are optimizing on the search phrases Flowers, San Francisco, San Francisco Florist, etc. Check out their page in Firefox, and do a CTRL+F and enter Flowers. Watch how many times the word FLOWER appears on their page, and read the text outload. This is clearly Google friendly web content!
