Question: I have a new website www. – – – .com that I built from GoDaddy’s Website tonight solution. What is your opinion of these types of Do it yourself sites and how much SEO can really be accomplished with them?
Answer: The proof of the pudding is in the eating, as they say. By this, I mean it doesn’t really matter what HTML product system you use – it could be a CMS (Content Management System), pure hand-coded HTML, or one of the online HTML editors such as Website Tonight from GoDaddy! The real issue is what sort of HTML output is produced.
What I suggest is – use your editor / WYSIWYG tool. Follow the basic principles of On Page SEO – such as using a proper HTML TITLE tag, a good META DESCRIPTION tag, A HREF tags, IMG ALT attributes etc. Be sure to weave your target keyword / keyprase in the appropriate page. Then output the file to the web.
At that point, do a VIEW SOURCE. Does the HTML output accord with SEO best practices? Is the TITLE tag there the way you inputted it? Do you see a pithy META DESCRIPTION tag? If so, you are great. If not, you have a problem.
Either way, go back to your editor / WYSIWYG tool. Make sure that you have viewed / researched all options. I know on Go Daddy for example, you CAN insert META TAGS – it is done through preferences or some such thing, and you CAN add the ALT attribute to images. You just have to experiment and research the tool.
That said, at some point, you might want to graduate up to an HTML editor such as COFFEECUP or CSE HTML VALIDATOR and then upload your files via FTP. Most service providers like GO DADDY do allow this.
